A study developed within the framework of the CARINA project was presented at the 34th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) by Maria Giovanna Sessa from the University of Bologna.
The presentation, entitled “Cultivating the Future of Flight: Brassica carinata for Sustainable Aviation Fuel”, focused on the potential of Brassica carinata as an intermediate crop and assessed the carbon intensity of carinata-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) according to the methodology established under the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
The study was carried out within the framework of the CARINA project and contributes to ongoing efforts to better understand how alternative oilseed crops can support both sustainable agricultural systems and the development of renewable fuel value chains.
As the aviation sector seeks solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable feedstocks are attracting increasing attention. Research activities such as this provide valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating crops like carinata into future bio-based and renewable energy systems.
The presentation at EUBCE offered an opportunity to share these results with the international biomass and bioeconomy community, contributing to discussions on the role of sustainable feedstocks in supporting Europe’s transition towards lower-carbon transport and energy systems.
