LIVING LABS

From Co-creating Solutions With Farmers and Value-Chain Actors

CARINA’s Living Labs bring together farmers, cooperatives, advisers, industry partners, and policymakers to collaboratively design and test sustainable cropping systems based on camelina and carinata.

Active across Europe and North Africa, these Living Labs create a space where regional actors can:

  • explore how the crops perform under real farming conditions,
  • discuss potential bio-based applications,
  • examine sustainability implications,
  • and identify policy and market opportunities and barriers.

A Growing Network

Introduced in the early stages of the project, Living Labs were first launched in Italy, France, and Spain, and later expanded to Serbia, Tunisia, and Morocco. Each edition includes workshops, field visits, and open discussions tailored to local agricultural and market conditions.

Upcoming editions in 2025–2026 will also include visits to biorefineries, giving stakeholders direct insight into how camelina and carinata are transformed into bio-based products.

Key Insights So Far

Engagement across countries has already generated important findings:

  • Carinata remains largely unknown to many farmers — more awareness-building is needed.
  • Both crops are primarily linked to biofuel production, showing potential for diversification into new value chains.
  • Nearly 200 on-site farmer surveys have helped map knowledge levels, expectations, and practical challenges.
  • Interviews with European and North African experts have highlighted technical, economic, and regulatory barriers to scaling up.
  • Analysis of external factors has clarified what is needed to establish new, resilient bio-based value chains.

Looking Ahead

The knowledge gathered through the Living Labs will feed into:

  • country-specific roadmaps,
  • business plans,
  • and recommendations to support stakeholders interested in adopting and scaling camelina and carinata systems.

These Living Labs will continue throughout the project, strengthening collaboration and paving the way toward sustainable, diversified farming landscapes.
